I have only recently experienced the Hadraa. I am very interested to understand the origin and the significance of this method of Dhikr. I have found some divergent views on it, and I would appreciate some balanced views and comment that will assist me in my understanding.

InshaAllah, the above link will clarify and answer your questions about the 'Hadra practices'. Please also read all of the comments below the initial answer in that link, for further information, inshaAllah.
i also remember hearing Maulana Shaykh Hisham mention that 'Hadra" is a good way to interest the youth and bring them to the masjid, instead of going to clubs to dance, they have movement in Hadra practices(with wholesome Adab) to satisfy their interest. i have seen our Shuyukh allow the young to rap, using praises to Allah, swt, to express themselves within the hadra. Someone who reads this may recall a time in the Burton masjid, where some young brothers expressed themselves during hadra by drumming and doing rap expression. The words were good and clean, it allowed them to feel excepted within the Naqshbandi tariqa. That is the wisdom of our Shuyukh. They know when something is good to do and it's benefits. Young children are not restrained from entering the circle to do whirling, as they see the older mureeds do. i think it is beautiful for everyone to feel that they can express themselves in a Blessed and praiseworthy way. No one is excluded. i also saw a sister whirl also which was done very tastefully. She was fully clothed in loose fitting clothes and she followed the Adab of receiving permission from her Shaykh. My point being, tassawuf allows full expression, done with wholesomeness and goodness. Everyone leaves feeling happy and fulfilled. SubhanAllah!

Definition of Fellowship:
1. The companionship of individuals in a pleasant atmosphere.
2. A close association of friends sharing similar interests.
